The 2020 Stingray is Reportedly Almost Sold Out...But Here's the Convertible and C8R

Selling Like Hotcakes

There's no denying that the 2020 Stingray unveiling turned the automotive world upside down. But that's what happens when you offer a sub-3.0-second 0-60 time in an attractive package for less than $60k. So it's really no surprise that the 2020 Stingray is selling like hotcakes, months before it even actually hits dealerships.

Going, Going, Gone

What is surprising is that the 2020 model year C8 has sold so well that it's almost completely sold out. At least, that's what GM design chief Michael Simcoe told the crowd during the recent Concours d’Elegance of America.

Almost Sold Out

"I think the orders have already hit the first year of production numbers," were Simcoe's exact words. Afterward, Autoblog was able to track him down and get a little verification on that claim. "It’s nearly sold out," Simcoe told Autoblog. "It’s so close that it’s bound to be sold out soon."

Double Debut

And this isn't the only interesting C8 news we have to pass on, either. Turns out, General Motors also released a teaser video roughly a week after the car's debut that reveals both the convertible version of the C8 and the C8.R racer.

Unique Design

While the convertible was completely uncovered and unbothered by camo, the C8.R is obviously wrapped up pretty tightly. What we can tell from the images is that the convertible features a folding hard top that opens like a clamshell, folding and sliding under the car's flying buttress.

Making Concessions

Obviously, designing a drop-top version of the mid-engine C8 presented some challenges. And perhaps the biggest disappointment that arises from that is the fact that the convertible loses the regular C8's very cool clear glass engine cover.

Exploring the Unknown

As far as the C8.R goes, well, we just don't know much about it yet. But we do know that the mid-engine layout should give the car a significant improvement in the handling department. Otherwise, there's no telling what sort of power plant we'll see in the new racer.

The Future Is Now

And these are just two variants of a platform that figures to have many debuts over the coming years. GM officials have already confirmed an electrically-assisted drivetrain for one model as well. The future, as they say, is certainly now!
